Initial Award Abstract
In the late 1970's, the tobacco industry realized that secondhand smoke was becoming a social disadvantage for smokers. To remedy this, the tobacco industry engaged in a series of research and development projects to produce a more socially acceptable cigarette. This proposal seeks to understand the scientific aspects of these projects and learn useful information about the biological effects of secondhand smoke from them.

The specific aims of this study are to: 1. Analyze how chemical and biological experiments were used together in the effort to produce a more socially acceptable cigarette. 2. Perform a comprehensive study of the use of biological assays by the tobacco industry to assess the carcinogenicity and other toxicity of secondhand tobacco smoke. 3. Compare and contrast the research done privately by the tobacco companies with the research and information they made available to the public.

The data this research will analyze are the approximately 40 million pages of tobacco industry documents mad public as the result of the suit by the state of Minnesota and Blue Cross/Blue Shield and subsequent litigation against the major tobacco companies. Three specific sets of tobacco documents will be searched: The Minnesota Depository, via the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library and industry sites, 120,000 pages from the Guildford Depository, selected for relevance to secondhand smoke and located at UCSF, and a collection of legal documents from suits against the tobacco companies filed under California Proposition 65. As new materials become available they will be added to this data set. Research from the open scientific literature will also be incorporated into this work. Searches will be conducted using variations on the snowball method. Relevant documents will be reviewed iteratively to construct a thorough analysis of the scientific research the tobacco industry did on secondhand smoke and the relationship between their work and the work in the public scientific literature. This increased knowledge of secondhand smoke will contribute to development of policies to create smoke-free environments. More smoke-free environments reduce the rate of smoking, which will prevent heart disease, cancer and other tobacco-related diseases, by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, and by creating an environment that encourages smokers to quit.
