Preserving at-risk tobacco control policy resources

This project continues the UCSF Library's efforts to collect and preserve material in the Minnesota Depository, the location of litigation material from six tobacco companies. Identifying, describing and preserving multi-media material was the focus for Year 1 of this project. While the paper materials from Minnesota are preserved and online through the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library the multi-media materials have limited or not description both in the database and at the Depository restricting use and access.
Grant staff visited the Minnesota Depository to evaluate the materials and confirm that it contains approximately 5,000 multi-media items. Brief records were created for all the known items with descriptive information added as it was available. For some items the project staff needed to view the item to locate essential data (title, date, Bates number). We are now completing work on 1,000 records lacking any descriptive information and will have basic e information for the entire set by June 30. Additionally, some items that were supposedly in the Depository collection were missing and we are working to obtain information about those items.
We have requested copies for the UCSF Library of over 300 items from the Depository that have been identified as high value.
Work is underway to modify the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/ to add the new multi-media collection and this feature will be added early in the next grant year |
