Initial Award Abstract
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and currently there are no effective treatments. Approximately 80-90% of COPD cases can be attributed to smoking. COPD is an inflammatory pulmonary disease characterized by airflow limitation and presents as either chronic bronchitis, emphysema or both. The repeated exposure of the spontaneously hypertensive to tobacco smoke mimics the chronic lung inflammation representative of human COPD better than other rodent models. Specifically spontaneously hypertensive rats have a robust inflammatory response following tobacco smoke exposure, a sustained inflammatory response with continued exposure to tobacco smoke and progression in cellular changes symptomatic for COPD. The proposed work will use this SH rat model to better understand the progression of COPD, its correlation to anatomical changes in the lung and test Statins as a promising new treatment for COPD with the potential to prevent and reverse the smoke induced chronic inflammatory changes of the disease.
