Documenting the Regulation of Marijuana Use in Smokefree Environments

Initial Award Abstract |
The ANR Foundation requests that the TRDRP fund a special research project that will enhance the current tobacco control laws database to include laws (and/or the lack thereof) that address marijuana. Similar to the on-going updating of our database as it concerns e-cigarettes and other alternative “smoking devices”, the legalization of marijuana in California has the potential to undermine existing smokefree ordinances, hence the monitoring, tracking and maintaining a database of these laws is critical for tobacco control and protecting public health in California. There is an immediate need to sustain and enhance our tobacco related laws database collection to document trends in regulating the use of marijuana in smokefree environments. This pilot project would focus on laws and rules in California; however, this information is critical for and would have an impact on the national tobacco control movement. California has traditionally been at the forefront of emerging issues in tobacco control and this work would benefit not only the health of Californians, but have a significant impact nationally. |
